Now that I know my secretor status, according to Eat Right 4 Your Type, I have started eating avocados again. A lot. Before I knew my secretor status, I followed the program as if I were a secretor, which meant not eating any avocados. I missed them for the nine months or so that I abstained. I even stopped looking at them at the grocery store. It is amazing to me what we can adapt to if only we give ourselves the opportunity to try. There are a lot of unusual rules in the ER4YT plan that don’t seem logical; like I can eat avocado but NOT avocado oil. I find it all very interesting especially because it seems to be so effective for me. I did the secretor salivary test a few months ago: I am a Non-Secretor. The good news is that I can eat avocados again, the bad news is that Non-Secretors have, potentially, a health disadvantage; which gives me even more reason to stay on top of what I eat. My Homemade Guacamole Recipe
1 – 2 TBSP. diced Spanish Onion
1 – 2 TBSP. seeded and diced Tomatoes
2 TBSP. finely chopped Cilantro leaves
less than 1/4 tsp. Cayenne Pepper
2 Very Ripe Hass Avocado (pictured above) mashed and leave some in chunks.
Juice from half of a fresh lime (it should be very juicy, producing at least 2 TBSP.)
2 twists of the Sea Salt Mill
NOTE: I’m sure any variety of avocado will do, but I prefer the taste and texture of the Hass Avocado.
Not sure there is an easier recipe? Just prepare all the ingredients in the order I’ve listed and combine together. Voila!

Today I made another batch and added some finely diced garlic.
To my surprise, I prefer it without the garlic. The garlic seemed to hide the cayenne pepper. Interesting.
By the way, the following Blood Types should avoid avocado.
- AB (secretor & non-secretor),
- B (secretor & non-secretor) and
- O (secretor)
- Beneficial for Blood Type O (non-secretor)
- Neutral for Blood Type A (secretor & non-secretor)
Love your photographs Youasamachine! I add in broccoli and cooked edamame or green peas for fibre and protein. It’s delicious and you can’t even tell!

Huh. I think I always use them. Never really thought about toxic leaves.
And one of these days, I really should learn my blood type. Is there any way to find it out that doesn’t involve needles?
Last April, 2011 I used the home blood type test kit to test my kids (then 6 & 8 – they have summer birthdays). For years I’d been trying to find out their blood types through our doctors, but because they were born at home with mid-wives the hospitals couldn’t find the records for me. Everyone was so suspicious as to why I wanted to know their blood type. As frustrating as it was, it became quite comical and ridiculous.

One kid was apprehensive, the other was excited to try this science experiment. The apprehensive child exclaimed how easy it was and was surprised it didn’t even hurt. They’ve since done the saliva test, which is super easy…just spit into a small vile…a kids dream test!
I donate blood every 56 days, and when I check in they do this same little test with the lancet on my finger to assess if my haemoglobin levels are 125 or above. Sometimes I feel it more than other times, but for you at least there are no needles (poking into veins) involved for the test.

Mmm. I love guacamole. What’s wrong with cilantro stems though?
Nothing wrong per se. I have prepared food both ways: using the leaves and bits of stems or leaves only. I have found that by using only the leaves the flavour seems to be more elegant – not sure how else to describe it. I love the stems and have munched on them, but find that I prefer the final product without the stems. Let me know what you think if you try it both ways.
Some people say the stems have a kind of soapy flavour – I never found that, so it’s not for that reason on my part.
I also find that when I prepare food, by taking the extra time to be precise (as I do with exercise)it makes me that much more in tune with the moment.
Also, I have come across strange leaves that are not cilantro in bunches on more than one occasion, and had I not picked through as I do, I may have easily included them in my meal. Years ago, I read a story about a woman who ate some toxic leaves that were growing close to her lettuces. I guess that story left it’s mark.
By the way: Blood type AB,B & O(secretor) should all avoid avocado. (I’ll have to add this to my post.)
